Ocean View Christian Academy, or OVCA,  was founded as Midway Baptist Schools to be a Christ-centered school in order to provide an alternative to public education for church families.  Opening with a full K-12th program, Midway/Ocean View Christian has been graduating Patriots since 1977.  Over the years a lot has changed, but a lot has stayed the same as well.  Our mission has always been to keep a biblical worldview at the heart of all we do and our commitment to excellence is still at the core of what we offer to our families.  Today, OVCA is a Christ-centered, dually accredited, college prep academy offering families with children in preschool through high school a Biblically based education with a complete school experience.

Ocean View Christian Academy History

---

1977

OVCA opens as Midway Baptist School in Imperial Beach.  An ACE (Accelerated Christian Education) school, it is a ministry to members of Midway Baptist Church.  Jim Baize, the visionary who founded the school selected Sam Garrison as its first principal.  Midway Baptist School moves to its present location on Palm Ave.

1983

Under the leadership of Evan Horton, the nephew of the founder of Abeka curriculum, Midway switched to the more traditional Abeka materials.  It began to become a school that offers services to the community at large rather than just to members of Midway Baptist Church.

1984

Chuck Campbell was named principal.  Mr. Campbell transitioned the school to Abeka by adapting the new materials to Midway’s personality.

1991

Marco Nunez became the new principal. He broadened our outreach to the Hispanic community.

1992

Chuck Campbell returns as principal.

---

2001

Steve Johnson assumes leadership of Midway Baptist School.  Every year, numerous enhancements to the program and campus are implemented.

2005

After agreement from the board, Midway begins the process of accreditation.

---

2006

In the spring, Midway is approved as a candidate for ACSI (Association of Christian Schools International) accreditation.
​In the summer, after gathering ideas from the school community, Midway proposes new founding documents to the staff, parents, and board.  The founding documents become official that fall.

2009

Midway earns a six-year term of accreditation through ACSI (Association of Christian Schools International) and WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges).

2010

Midway Baptist Church is renamed to Ocean View Church.  As a ministry of the church, Midway Baptist Schools changes its name to Ocean View Christian Academy.

2017

Ocean View Christian Academy celebrates 40 years equipping students SPIRITUALLY, ACADEMICALLY, SOCIALLY, and PHYSICALLY.

2022

Timothy Rutherford is selected by the school board as the next principal and head of school to lead OVCA into the future.

Today

Ocean View Christian Academy is home to more than 490 students, 800 graduates, 60+ faculty and staff, and countless purposed hearts.
